Another pre-season is upon us and once again we are fed laughable stories from across the city, this time it is Rangers defender Nikola Katic having his say on a phantom league championship.
Katic, who is currently out injured indefinitely due to Alfredo Morelos sitting on him in training, claimed that Steven Gerrard’s side would be champions if they played Celtic every week.
The Croatian, speaking to the media in his homeland, said: “In the league, Celtic have been champions for years, but we matched them very well last season before we fell away after the break.
“At every step, you can feel the rivalry and I feel we are at least on their level. Those games against Celtic are a special experience, I had the good fortune to experience a victory and I will remember that for the rest of my life.
“If we had played every game last season against Celtic, we would be champions. Against them, we were always playing at a high standard.
“In the Cup Final, we were impossibly good against Celtic, but just couldn’t score.”
Before we even get to the rest of his claims, we need to interrupt poor Katic here before he makes a bigger fool of himself.
Celtic and Rangers played against one another three times last season, and Rangers won only once with Celtic winning the other two games — including the League Cup Final.
So how could you win the league if you played every game against Celtic given that Celtic won more games that you did? I know that maths isn’t a strong point down Govania way — but even a five year old knows that two is greater than one.
Even when you consider all the games that Rangers have played against Celtic since Katic signed for the Ibrox side, Celtic still come out on top to the tune of four wins out of seven. So again, Celtic would be crowned champions going by the win ratio.
Some of the performances from Celtic may not have been great in some of those games, but at the end of the day the final result is all that matters and making claims during pre-season count for nothing when the league is awarded at the end of the season not in December.
Katic continued: “There is certainly a difference in finances, but the Scottish league is quite difficult because it is not easy to play away at Aberdeen, Hearts and others.”
Maybe Katic and the rest of the Rangers squad should try to win the games that they actually play rather than phantom games played out in their wee delusional little heads.
Going by his logic and mathematical skills, Kilmarnock who only won game out of three against Rangers should actually have a right to call themselves champions in the Phantom League — I wonder if the Rangers fans will try to claim that as an official league title as they are trying to do with the unofficial league titles won during the Second World War — while they hid in the shipyards?
Once again, Rangers players are trying to win silverware in newspaper columns rather than where it matters most — on the pitch. But I guess that’s what happens when you are serial losers.
